Interesting conversation. up until the early 80's our church ( First UU of Syracuse NY ) gave Bibles to graduating seniors now I believe they give manuals about how to survive in college. Last Christmas when minister wanted a reading from NT no one could find a copy of the Bible in the church!
I facilitated an online Bible study using John Buehrens book, " understanding the Bible for Skeptics, liberals and Seekrs". It ran for three winters @ 2002-4. There were @ 10 each for the two parts about the Old Testament but the program fell apart when we got to the NT. I wish I had asked more questions about why people lost interest so I can't give a reason for this but I have my suspicions.
I would enjoy an online Bible study as the ones that run here in various churches in Syracuse always seem to be at inconvenient times.

Rev. Naomi,
A fascinating question. I'm somewhat taken aback by it, since it seems
so completely divorced from the modern UU experience (a "Bible-free" as
opposed to "Free-Bible" zone, LOL) I don't believe that Horizon has ever
done such a thing. The closest thing was purchase of Good News
Translation for a teen curriculum a couple of years back. Don't think
they were given to the kids, though.
I'm with Cecil re: where you should get your first Bible (or sex ed, for
that matter...)
"Bible study" can obviously cover a lot of ground. We did a Lenten study
of the lectionary readings a couple of years back, but it was very
sparsely attended. In the UU environment, Bible study seems like it
often gets reduced to a purely academic enterprise: who wrote it, when,
what was the socio-political milieu, etc. At some point, I feel like one
has to engage with the text and figure out what it might have to say to
a modern person walking this path. In the lectionary class we tried
using the African Bible Study Method, to try and counter our tendency to
intellectualize everything. For those unfamiliar with it, there is a
short synopsis here: http://www.takomaparkpc.org/AfricanBibleStudy.html
If there is interest for an online Bible study for the UUCF, as a
self-deputized technical officer, I can investigate what options might
be available. I know that there are several open source "virtual
learning environments" available. I'm uncertain about "real time"
conferencing, I would guess that they tend to be asynchronous, but I can
look around. We could host a small group (up to 10 or 12) live on our
GoToMeeting link, if that was desirable.
Let's keep the conversation going.
Grace and peace be with you.
