Sigh----Please excuse me if I am a bit cranky. As a life long lesbian, I
get really sick with the use and misuse of scripture....any scripture.
Especially when they are used to deny me my human rights. I have heard all
of the arguments all of my life. Blah!
A basic problem: The core foundation of interpretation of scripture
between liberal religious folks and non-religious liberal folks is
fundamentally different. It is nearly impossible for the two to meet, let
alone converse. A verse by verse, tit for tat, is useless. Non-liberal
religious folks may consider the Bible the unalterable revelation of God,
now in ink, not to be changed and taken literally, forever and ever, Amen.
More liberal religious folks may look to the Bible for inspiration,
considering the Spirit of the work; paying more attention to the essence,
not the particular individual words. We could line up verses for and
against many issues. What then do we have? Individuals who can recite many
verses of the Christian Scripture, while they miss the fundamental message
of God's love. Curious.
OK---that said, check out the following websites for a good interpretation
of numerous Bible verses related to gay issues:

www.soulforce.org
www.whosoever.org
Apologies if I am sounding harsh. I have sat for days listening to
arguments in the Massachusetts State House related to this issue. And have
been attacked numerous times by 'church people'. I do not have words to
describe what it is like to have my beloved scriptures used against me, and
my family. Sigh.
As a UU I am concerned that our current federal administration is trying
to turn our country into a theocracy, which I believe is not a good thing,
especially for liberal religious folks. I may be more frightened than I
want to admit. I am not convinced that in the halls of our government is an
appropriate place for the Chrisitian Scriptures. Why not the Koran? Why
not......any other scripture?
Is there no other way to argue the issue of gay marriage?
Abundant Blessings.
