As previously noted in an earlier uua-l message, the Reverend Dr. Rudolph W.
Nemser died Saturday, August 3, 2002. He was 74 years of age.
Dr. Nemser was born July 31, 1928 in New York, New York. He received an
A.B., a S.T.B. and a S.T.M. from Harvard University. He also received a
C.A.S and a M.S. from State University of New York and a Doctor of Divinity
from Meadville Lombard Theological School.
Dr. Nemser was ordained June 15, 1952 by the First Unitarian Society of
Whitman, Massachusetts. He served congregations in Harvard, Massachusetts;
Fairfax, Virginia; Schenectady, New York, and Cherry Hill, New Jersey. The
Unitarian Universalist Church of Cherry Hill, New Jersey named him Minister
Emeritus on January 1, 2001.
He created a set of guidelines for the Unitarian Universalist Ministers
Association, which was adopted in 1968, and he was the recipient of the
Unitarian Universalist Ministers Association Meritorious Service Award in
1982. For many years he was Scribe of the Berry Street Conference of
Unitarian Universalist Ministers and a member of the Fraters of the Wayside
Inn, a group of Unitarian Universalist ministers which has met in retreat
annually since 1901. He was a past president of the Joseph Priestley
District as well.
In addition to his ministerial duties he was active in community affairs.
During the Vietnam War he counseled Conscientious Objectors, and in 1965 he
joined Dr. Martin Luther King in the March to Selma. He was also active in
a variety of family service associations.
Dr. Nemser is survived by his wife, the Reverend Dr. Judith Wright; his
daughters, Sarah Holt of New Jersey, Katherine Kelly of Idaho; and Tobey
Nemser of Massachusetts. Also surviving are nine grandchildren, his brother
William Nemser of Austria, his nephew William Nemser of Florida and four

A service of remembrance will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, October 26,
2002, at the Unitarian Universalist Church,401 North Kings Highway, Cherry
Hill, New Jersey. The Reverend W. Bradford Greeley will officiate with the
Reverend Melanie Morel Sullivan co-officiating.
