To: Member Congregations
From: Denise Taft Davidoff, Moderator, ddavidoff at uua.org

The Reverend Dr. William R. Jones has resigned as Trustee-At-Large
of the Association effective December 11, 1999. In accordance with
Article VI, Section 6.8 of the Bylaws, it is up to the Board of
Trustees to fill this vacancy until the 2001 General Assembly at
which time the vacancy can be filled according to the regular
election process.

The Board of Trustees Policy for Mid-Term Appointment of a
Trustee-At-Large calls on the Moderator "to ask the Executive
Committee of the UUA Board to serve as an Ad Hoc Nominating
Committee which shall be chaired by the Secretary of the
Association. The Nominating Committee shall establish a time-table
for the process for the Board to fill the vacancy. The Moderator
shall then inform our congregations of the vacancy as well as the
process and the time-table to be used to fill the vacancy."

The Executive Committee met in a telephone conference on Thursday,
December 16. Present and voting were the Reverend Wayne Arnason,
Secretary, Dr. Elisabeth McGregor, First Vice Moderator, Gini
Courter, Chair of the UUA Finance Committee, and Lawrence Ladd,
Financial Advisor, as well as the Reverend Dr. John A. Buehrens,
President, without vote. Kathleen Montgomery, Executive Vice
President, was present as Recording Secretary.

Here are the decisions we made together:

1.The Executive Committee will announce openly that it has a strong
preference to fill this vacancy with a person of color.

2.People are invited to self-nominate or nominate others; these
nominations are to be mailed to The Reverend Wayne Arnason, c/o
Nancy Lawrence, Unitarian Universalist Association, 25 Beacon
Street, Boston, MA 02108, or faxed to Ms. Lawrence at (617) 367-
3237. It is the intent of the Committee to only consider candidates
whose nominations have been received at the UUA by 5:00 PM on
Friday, January 15, 2000.

Nancy Lawrence is Kay Montgomery's assistant and will serve as
staff to the Executive Committee during this election. Wayne Arnason
(warnason at uua.org) and I (ddavidoff at uua.org) will be available to
answer questions by e-mail or phone.

3.Nominations should include a summary of the candidate's
qualifications and either three letters of reference or names of
three references with phone numbers and/or e-mail addresses for
the Committee to contact. Please do not nominate a person without
first confirming that s/he is willing to serve.

4.The Ad Hoc Nominating Committee will consider nominations during
a meeting to be held at Pickett House in Boston on Thursday morning,
January 20, with the Reverend Arnason presiding. He will present
the Committee's final report to the Board of Trustees on Saturday
morning, January 22, and the written balloting will take place
thereafter. Nominations will also properly be received from the
floor.

The new Trustee-At-Large will be eligible to run for a full four year
term in 2001 and for a second full four year term in 2005. If
elected at the January meeting, s/he will be expected to start
service at the May 6-8 meeting of the Board to be held in Wakefield,
MA and be present before and during the Nashville General
Assembly, June 20-27, 2000.

This Notice will be mailed to settled ministers and to all member
congregations and placed on the UUA website and various electronic
mailing lists. It is my hope that, despite the hectic pace of the
Season, many people will be made aware of this Special
Election.

Elliot Richardson, 79, a Unitarian Universalist whose 1973 resignation as
U.S. Attorney General ignited the infamous "Saturday Night Massacre" in the
Nixon administration, died on January 1, 2000 of a cerebral hemorrhage
following a stroke suffered earlier in the week.

"He was a wonderful man to be greatly honored and admired," said Archibald
Cox, the special prosecutor Richardson refused to fire on Oct. 20, 1973,
defying an order from President Richard M. Nixon.

President Bill Clinton called him "a man of uncommon integrity," and added,
"(He) put the nation's interests first even when the personal cost was very
high. He was an unparalleled public servant - a lawyer, a diplomat, a
soldier, and a prosecutor," Clinton said.

While Watergate thrust Mr. Richardson into a national spotlight, where he
served in four cabinet positions filling top-level positions, he had also
been a major player in Massachusetts government and legal circles for more
than a decade when he moved to the national scene. An active Unitarian
Universalist, Richardson once chaired the board at First and Second Church
in Boston. He was a devoted public servant whose book, "Reflections of a
Moderator," is a very moving account of a life devoted to the common good.

More recently, Richardson had practiced law following his departure from
government, affiliating with the Washington office of the New York law firm
Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy, from which he retired in 1992.

Descended from early New England settlers, Mr. Richardson was born in
Boston and married Anne Francis Hazard in 1952. She died in July. They are
survived by two sons, Henry of Washington, D.C., and Michael of Montclair,
N.J.; a daughter, Nancy Carlson of Burlington, Vt.; a brother,George of
Nahant; and seven grandchildren.

Memorial services for Elliott Richardson will be held at 10:30 am on
Saturday, January 15 at the National Cathedral in Washington, DC. The Rev.
Dr. Rhys Williams, Minister Emeritus of First and Second Church in Boston,
will preside, and President Clinton is expected to speak at the service.

UUA President John A. Buehrens, who will be in England, will be represented
at the service by Robert Cavenaugh, a member of the UUA's Washington Office
staff.

Staff openings are now available for Opus 2000 and for young adult ministry
programs at General Assembly 2000. The coordinators are particularly
interested in drawing in new people into the leadership of the continental
Unitarian Universalist young adult/campus ministry programs - as well as
organizing another summer of events that are meaningful, and faith-deepening.

If you would really enjoy the challenge of working with a dozen other UU
young adults from across the continent who are striving to build community,
create a spiritual home and organize for social justice, this is the
opportunity for you.

Send a one to two page written statement of interest, including a bit about
yourself, what your involvement is with Unitarian Universalism, what staff
roles you are interested in and why you would be good and happy with the
staff role. You may express interest in more than one staff position.

Applications are due by January 15, 2000 via email to conferences at uuyan.org
or by sending (Postmarked by January 15, 2000) to:

C*UUYAN-UUA

Young Adult Staff positions for General Assembly 2000 (June 22-27, 2000 in
Nashville, TN) are also available. Staff must arrive on June 21 in the
evening,
unless otherwise arranged. Positions include Outreach Coordinators (2
positions), which offer a $300 stipend, and the opportunity to communicate
and network with young adult/college students, youth and, as needed, the
broader UU community about the young adult events at GA.

Worship Coordinators (2 positions) are also available, with a $300 stipend.
Responsibilities include coordinating 4 night-time worships during the
