Title: Interim District Executive, Massachusetts Bay
District (MBD)
Staff Group: District Services
Reports to: Director for District Services and Mass Bay District
Board
Basic Purpose: For an interim period of one and up to two years,
promote the health and growth of Unitarian Universalist (UU)
congregations through the delivery of effective programs and services in
the Massachusetts Bay District of the UUA.
Principal Responsibilities:
1. Provides leadership to foster health and growth
of district congregations by direct contact with lay leaders, ministers,
and other professional staff and by consultation and programming,
2. Acts as liaison and communication link between
UUA headquarters staff, MBD Board and staff and committees and
congregations,
3. Provides information on MBD and UUA policies,
programs and resources to congregations and ministers,
4. Provides UUA and MBD with evaluations of the
effectiveness of local,
district and UUA programming,
5. Responds to crisis situations in congregations
and other requests for consultations on ongoing needs such as fund
raising, leadership training, etc.
6. Attends MBD Board meetings and other committee
meetings, and explores various potential models of governance with the
board
7. Maintains knowledge of UUA principles, policies
and programs and awareness of developing congregational trends and
concerns.
Qualifications:
* Substantive leadership experience at the District and/or UUA
level,
* Either a fellowshipped UU minister or a UU lay leader,
* Extensive experience with multiple UU Congregations,
* Knowledge of the profession of ministry and demonstrated
collaborative relationships with UU ministers,
* Strong communication skills, and public speaking ability,
* Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with staff,
volunteers, Boards & Committees,
* Experience with organizational development and leadership
development
* Demonstrated commitment to life-span religious education
. Experience with conflict resolution
* Ability to take initiative, set priorities and manage time well
* Ability to inspire trust and confidence in lay and professional
leaders

Interim District Executive
ADDITIONAL JOB INFORMATION AND RESPONSIBILITIES
(Pending June 7th Approval by Mass Bay District Board)
Accountability:
Jointly employed by the Unitarian Universalist Association and the Mass
Bay District (MBD), the Interim District Executive (IDE) is accountable
to both organizations. The IDE reports jointly to the Director for
District Services and the MBD Board President and Board.
The UUA provides support, guidance, and accountability for the MBD
Executive through the Director for District Services, The District
Services Handbook, the Guidelines for UUA District Services
Professionals, and the UUA Human Resources Manual.
The Interim District Executive, as approved by the MBD Board, will be
hired for one year with a possible extension of up to one year.
Evaluations of the work and job performance of the MBD Interim District
Executive are made by both employers, the UUA Department for District
Services and the MBD.

On-going Consultant
Responsibilities in this role include:
1. being accessible and available to our congregations, lay
leaders, ministers, and other professional staff,
2. being accessible and available to our District Board and to the
UUA
3. consulting in conflict situations, in situations of sexual
misconduct and on safe congregation issues, on stewardship, on issues of
shrinking as well as growing congregations, on organizational structure
and development issues in congregations and in the district,
4. responding to crisis and emergency intervention situations.
Management
Responsibilities in this role include:
. Providing resources and information between groups,
. Overseeing the functioning of a complex volunteer
organization,
. In consultation with MBD Nominating Committee, recruiting and
recommending District lay leaders,
. Ensuring vitality of MBD programming,
. Providing leadership to District staff,
. Supervising administrative staff,
. Collaborating with the board and with volunteer committees.
Communication & Representation
Responsibilities in this role include serving as a communication link
between the UUA and the district and congregations as well as
representing the district to the UUA, serving as a representative of the
Association to ceremonial functions, interfaith efforts, and to
ancillary organizations of the district and Association.
Leadership
Providing assistance to congregations so as to articulate and maintain
objectives, strategies, and vision,
Being an accessible and available presence,
Actively encouraging collaboration among congregations to share
resources and strategies for volunteer and leadership development,
Constructively challenging the District leadership as needed.
Growth
Responsibilities in this role include identifying, encouraging, and
supporting congregations in their efforts of growth. Working with MBD
committees, individuals, and congregations to extend Unitarian
Universalism within the district.
Training
The IDE has the responsibility of ensuring that there is an adequate
amount of high quality training available to district and congregational
leadership. This includes assuring that those who train district
"trainers" do so effectively. Examples of focus for this training role
are long-range planning, conflict resolution, canvass consulting,
worship, and leadership development at both the congregation and
district level.
Resource and Information Provider
Implicit in each of the above roles is the significant responsibility to
respond to inquiries, address issues, and serve as the resource person
and information provider to help congregations, individuals, the
ministry, the district and the Association carry out its purpose. The
Interim District Executive becomes the connecting point in maintaining
the organizational structure, information flow, and program efforts.
