May, 2007

Hello to our professional ministers in Canada

(and a “cc” to CUC board & staff).

This is a monthly update of news selected to be of interest to our
professional ministers, sent (around) the 5th of each month. I very much
appreciate hearing back from you as to what topics are most relevant to
you—and just feedback in general.

You are welcome to forward this message to anyone you feel would be
interested. Information is geared to what I feel professional ministers
would be interested in, but it is not a confidential message.

First of all – Congratulations to Rev. Stephen Atkinson, Rev. Shawn Newton
and Rev. Julie Stoneberg for successful candidating weeks and unanimous
votes at the North Shore Unitarian Church (West Vancouver, BC); Toronto
First and Peterborough Unitarian Fellowship.

Laura McNaughton – Director of Regional Services - West

Laura has now started work with us as DRS – West (for BC & Western regions),
albeit one-quarter time and from Edmonds, Washington, where she is the DRE.
She will be moving home to Saskatoon in June, and starting work with the CUC
full-time August 1. More information at: HYPERLINK

Vancouver in the Springtime

I am sitting in our little 9’x13’ office in the Administration building of
the Unitarian Church of Vancouver, watching the traffic go by at the corner
of 49th and Oak.

I am slowly reclaiming space in my Kitsilano apartment and bringing CUC
documents and files to the CUC West Office. It’s great having Janice Lincoln
here as our Administrative Coordinator – West, especially at this busy time
before the Annual Conference & Meeting.

And I am looking forward to seeing you all in my hometown soon. The UBC
campus is beautiful right now with lots of blooms and fewer students!

AN INVITATION TO A CONVERSATION

Friday, May 18th

9:00 – 10:30 pm

Vancouver School of Theology – UBC Campus

The CUC Board would like to invite all professional ministers to an
opportunity for dialogue at the 2007 Annual Conference and Meeting in
Vancouver. We will meet on Friday evening after the Opening Celebration at
VST; Rev. Dr. Wendy Fletcher, principal, will welcome us with a reception in
the Rotunda of the Iona (“Castle”) building. Enter from the main entrance on
the North Side. VST has kindly made space available for us to meet following
the reception.

Your president, Rev. Dr. Steven Epperson, and I will co-facilitate the
discussion. We will take a look at where the CUC is after five years of
standing on our own feet, discuss our partnership and mutual work, consider
the Go-4-It concept, explore where we are going, and how we can make the
journey together.

I look forward to the conversation with you.

Respectfully,

Vyda Ng

President

Annual Conference & Meeting

There’s a real range of interesting programs and events occurring throughout
the weekend and before. Thank you to Rev. Dr. Steven Epperson for suggesting
Dr. Robert Corrington for a 15-hour pre-conference course cosponsored by
Vancouver School of Theology. There are 16 people registered for the
Tuesday-Thursday program.

Except for the Multicultural RE Renaissance program, all pre-conference
events still have space for additional registrants.

Online and print-your-own registration forms can be found at:

7/registration.htm

Some concurrent sessions have been cancelled as having fewer than 10 people
registered and several are now full. (Several facilitators agreed to adjust
their limit and shift their plans to accommodate more people than they’d
originally planned on.)

MEALS: As well as catered program lunches, there are a number of restaurants
close by, and the SUB cafeteria, adjacent to the exhibitors’ area, will have
a hot buffet just for our group at breakfast ($7); lunch ($10) and dinner
($15).

NEW: We’ve added some things

- A Lay Chaplaincy recognition of retiring lay chaplains and new
lay chaplains offered by the two CUC Lay Chaplaincy Committees with the two
Chairs facilitating.

- A drum circle for all and all ages in the Great Hall of the
Museum of Anthropology from 7:00-8:30pm

ACCOMMODATION: If you or anyone you know still needs accommodation at UBC,
let them know you’re with the CUC conference when you contact them. Other
than suites, many styles of rooms are still available:

British Unitarian General Assembly

I enjoyed my visit with our British friends. They have recently gone through
a major restructuring and their General Secretary (my counterpart) retired
and a new C.E.O. is now in place. (hmmn. Some of that sounds familiar. Déjà
vu?)

While there, I took in some art (Renoir Landscapes and Gilbert & George in
the same day), theatre and went to France for the weekend, just because you
can do that.

CUC on Facebook and Flickr

With a specific focus on sharing photos and helping create connections at
the CUC Annual Conference & Meeting, we're experimenting with HYPERLINK

If you're interested, go to HYPERLINK

Unitarian Council".

If you have a good digital camera and like to take photos, I want to talk
with you!

Diversity pamphlet: Would we be welcome here?

With the drive and commitment of Rev. Mac Elrod, chair of the CUC’s Racial
and First Nations Equity Monitoring Group, we have produced a new pamphlet.
Samples will be at the ACM. Social Responsibility Resolutions in this area
are coming to Annual Meeting Part 2 and there’s still time to register for
the Welcoming & Celebrating Congregational Diversity workshop on Thursday,
May 17 at the Unitarian Church of Vancouver led by Rev. Keith Kron.

Take care,

Mary
