This list is for discussion of Unitarianism, Universalism and UUism in an international context. Participants live in many countries and share information and opinions from their own perspectives. List discussions are informal conversations among individuals and don't represent the views or policies of any particular organization unless specified in the message.
A special note about communication on this list: Messages are in English, but not all members of the list use English as a primary language. Misunderstandings can easily arise when people are writing or reading in a second language; it is easy to jump to mistaken conclusions. Don't be afraid to ask someone to explain what was meant, and be prepared to explain your own message if someone asks. To improve communication, try to write as simply and clearly as you can - clarity is more important than elegance! Please keep messages as brief and to the point as possible.
WHAT TO POST
If it is about Unitarianism or Universalism or UUism in an international context and of general interest, post it.
Here are some sample topics:
Religious education for young people and adults.
Upcoming events.
Relationship of state churches and Unitarian/Universalist groups in various countries.
History of Unitarianism and Universalism around the world.
Issues related to UU principles and current events in various countries (for example, this could include treatment of immigrants and refugees, the death penalty, environmental concerns).
WHAT NOT TO POST
If it doesn't clearly and directly relate to Unitarianism, Universalism, or UUism in an international context, don't post it.
If it continues an irrelevant thread in any way or is a nit-picking argument, don't post it.
If you made a point in a previous message, don't repeat the same information unless someone has asked you to explain.
If it is a personal message to a single subscriber, don't post it. Even if mail to that person bounces.
If you aren't sure, don't post it.
If it is something cute, interesting, or funny that you found on the Internet (e.g. Dr. Seuss on Tech Writing, press release about Microsoft God, origin of spam), don't post it. Most readers have seen it already.
OTHER
Do not directly attack anyone for anything on the list. Take issue with ideas, not personalities, and do NOT point out grammatical, spelling, or usage errors.
In order to avoid overloading list members' mailboxes and to encourage more people to participate in the discussions, please do not post more than 8 messages per week.
Try to be brief. Don't quote more than you need to in order to make your message clear. Don't include all previous messages on a topic. This list has a size limit of 5 KB per message. Longer messages will be referred to the list managers for approval. Usually you will be asked to make the message shorter or divide it into several shorter messages and send it again.
In general, one topic per message is a good idea.
Do not copy large amounts of text from newspapers or encyclopedias. If you want to refer people to information that is available on the Internet, include a link to the reference.
Check your facts on anything you post. Do not under any circumstances post virus warnings or anything else designed to be "forwarded to everyone you know" to this list. Do not post rumors.
Do not attach documents to list messages - they will be removed by the mailman program to make sure that viruses are not transmitted to our lists.
In addition to the preceding guidelines, please consult the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) list of e-mail list rules at http://www.uua.org/lists/listpolicies.html
