BtWWDA -- Resources for Building the World We Dream About (BtWWDA) Facilitators

About BtWWDA
English (USA)

Building the World We Dream About is a curriculum in development by the Unitarian Universalist Association of Congregations (UUA) designed to make Unitarian Universalism a more welcoming, inclusive, affirming, and just faith community for people of all races, ethnicities, and cultures seeking a liberal religious home. The curriculum was written by Mark Hicks, Ed.D. a member of All Souls Church, Unitarian/Washington, DC, and Associate Professor or Transformational Education at George Mason University, Virginia. For information about the curriculum, contact Taquiena Boston by email tboston@uua.org or call 202-296-4672, extension 18.

Program Goals
-To promote multicultural welcome, inclusion and affirmation in all facets of Unitarian Universalist congregational life;
-To develop participants’ knowledge and skills in addressing issues related to race, ethnicity and cultural identity both individually and institutionally;
-To identify ways congregations can become multiracial/multicultural communities of love and justice.

Approach: Building the World We Dream About is a 12-month series of interactive seminars that employs large and small group activities. Twice per month (every two weeks) participants explore topics that increase their understanding of race and ethnicity through spiritual reflection, journaling, visual arts, poetry, music, theater tools, simulations, and field trips. Several curriculum sessions also include racial/ethnic reflection groups. The program can be adapted as a religious education curriculum, a covenant group, or as an all-congregation study and action curriculum.

Leadership: Co-facilitation by two members of the congregation is required for this program. Ideally, co-facilitators would be a “multicultural” team.

Background: For several years, Unitarian Universalist congregations have requested that the UUA provide a “welcoming congregation type program” focused on race. BtWWDA is intended as another path to help congregations become more welcoming of racial, ethnic and cultural diversity and to dismantle racism in congregations and the larger community. Diverse religious professionals and lay leaders representing key stakeholder groups in the Unitarian Universalist community met in Boston in 2004 to articulate a vision, identify challenges, and strategize tools that would be useful to congregations seeking to become more racially and culturally inclusive and engaged in advancing racial justice and equity. A Project Advisory Committee comprised of UUA staff and volunteers is guiding the curriculum development process.
